“The VLAC is my daughter’s future. She will be able to build a meaningful life thanks to the Village Learning & Achievement Center.”
Susan Bulick – Kingwood TX

Our Mission

The mission of the Village Learning & Achievement Center is to create environments that enable individuals with learning and developmental disabilities to reach their maximum potential. In addition to improving the well being of individuals with disabilities, our goal is to celebrate and promote the spirit of inclusion in all aspects of human endeavor within our community and volunteer involvement in the lives of individuals with disabilities and strive to function as a catalyst for positive change by identifying and responding to community needs through a variety of programs.

About Us

The Village Learning & Achievement Center was established September 2000. The corporation was the creation of two mothers of special needs children, Kim Brusatori and Linda Schuiten, who realized that upon graduation their children had no options available to them in our local area other than coming home and watching TV. They knew that the area they lived in was large enough and had a significant number of special needs children from the work they both had done on the Special Education Parent Council of Humble Independent School District. They decided to start a non-profit corporation in order to foster services, programs and facilities for the children who lived in our area.

Today, almost 7 years later, the Village Learning & Achievement Center plays a vital role in the lives of over 300 persons with developmental and physical disabilities in our community. We provide supported employment, vocational training, after school care, transportation, residential services, transition services and a day program for those in need. Our services help make possible meaningful lives for both children and adults with disabilities and their families – since both are affected.

Village Learning & Achievement Center’s programs and alliances with the Humble Independent School District, Early Childhood Intervention - Keep Pace, the ARC of Greater Houston and the Lake Houston YMCA, enables us to touch more lives than if we were acting alone. We exist today by the grace of God and the generous support given by individuals, community businesses, churches and other non-profit organizations.

The Center receives many requests for services. There are over 90,000 people in Texas on waiting lists for the type of services we provide. Families frequently wait up to thirteen years before they receive any help at all. The divorce rate for families of children with disabilities is significantly higher than the average. As a result there are many mothers raising children with disabilities on their own. The lack and availability of adequate daycare and after-school care for these children and young adults makes the situation even worse.

The degree of care required by many of these individuals is higher than other similar centers are willing to provide. Village Learning & Achievement Center’s mission is to try and help no matter what the disability. This costs more but we realize that we could be the parent who has no other alternative and no one to turn to for help.

The alternative to Village Learning & Achievement Center for adults with disabilities is to stay home with no purpose. With help from the community, we will continue to grow in the future to meet the demand for appropriate services. Village Learning & Achievement Center opened in May 2002 with only six clients and today we touch the lives of over 300 children and adults – the day program alone serves over 40 Villagers each week.
